Hi all,
I am an educator and I am trying to provide online classes for my students. I am comparing a few platforms such as Teachable, Thinkific, Udemy and more.
Here are my needs:
- Able to accommodate 50-100 students or more
- Allows me to upload many videos of big sizes (1GB or more)
- Can create quizzes and assessments for progress tracking
- Important: Free to create and preferably free to use for my students too!
I am not planning to sell my courses to the public. It will be for internal use for my students that’s all. Any idea how I can go about doing that? Thanks a lot! Any other suggestions or recommendations will be much appreciated

The video hosting alone will be out of the range of any free options. That kind of storage isn’t free.
You could do something like upload them as private to YouTube and link to them or something. But I don’t know of any free platform that will provide free hosting for “many videos of big size (1 GB or more)”

The most cost effective for what you’re asking will be Moodle… But you’ll need someone who knows how to install and configure it.
Otherwise, I can’t think of anything that fits what you’re asking for free. In Canada, D2L is one of the most popular of the online classroom/school platforms, but it’s not cheap.

I’ve used Thinkific for our corporate training. I think it’s similar to most of the others on your list. I host my videos in a private YouTube channel (better hosting for streaming) and I paid less than a $1,000 for 500 users. It’s free to my customers but I locked down enroll, ents to request only. DM me if you like.

What about Teachable? What I am thinking of is to create courses on there for free and then charge like $0 or $1 for it. My students will then sign up for those courses and I will pay the $1 for them. Will that work? I understand that a small transaction fee will be paid to Teachable but I’m cool with that.
Hey there Ann!
Not sure if you are still looking for a course platform. However, I have been using TrainerCentral for a while now. So far good. There is a free plan. However, I think there are a few limitations there. And there aren’t any commissions to sell your courses.
