I might be arriving a bit late to this discussion, but I am curious about the benefits of having an LMS that supports SCORM. If you use SCORM, how has your experience been and what advantages have you found? I am not clear on why SCORM is important for companies and would appreciate more information on the topic.
A set of technical specifications for e-learning software products is called SCORM, or Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It ensures compatibility and interoperability by regulating the communication between Learning Management System and online learning content.
Really, SCORM is only a particular kind of file output used in e-learning. It is regarded as one of the standards for eLearning files (xAPI being the other), and the reason it matters is because many LMSs can read SCORM files.
Although SCORM is somewhat out of date—the most recent version, SCORM 2004, was implemented between 2004 and 2009—you should be aware that practically all LMSs still utilize it. Therefore, it is typically a safe choice to publish to SCORM.
The user’s progress through the course is transmitted to the LMS over SCORM interface. It signals as complete when they’re finished and sends that information to your LMS. In order for them to come back, it also preserves progress. In addition, some LMSs include built-in video and other features, as mentioned by the other poster, and xAPI can also accomplish that. However, SCORM is a must for tracking progress in e-learning courses and has the potential to function seamlessly in any Learning Management System.
