I’m an instructional designer in the UK currently working for a high-end e-learning agency with some well-known brands. I’m considering leaving to start my own business and would love some advice on how to get started. I have a teaching background and experience with authoring tools like Storyline. What should I do first to kick things off?
Start by getting as many speaking engagements as possible. Publishing articles can also really help you get noticed.

Great idea! Where’s the best place to publish articles? Should I just use my LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a good start. Eventually, you might want to aim for industry publications like TD Magazine or Learning Guild, especially the UK equivalents. It helps to build your credibility.
Definitely submit presentations to as many conferences as you can. Some might even cover your expenses.
Consider focusing on a niche industry, like pharma or oil and gas. Do some market research to identify gaps in your area.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Check your sales skills. If you can make sales happen, it’ll be easier to start your business. If not, consider learning more about sales first.

That’s a good point. I’ll look into improving my sales skills.
Can you share more about your target audience? Knowing their demographics and location could help shape your approach.
