Hey My Fella e-learners! I am looking into several learning management system (LMS) possibilities to host my online classes, and I was wondering if there were any good open source alternatives available. Since proprietary learning management systems may be highly costly, I am curious whether anyone in the community has had any luck with free or open-source LMS software. What are the benefits and drawbacks of using an open-source LMS as opposed to a for-profit one? While I look into which open source learning management system would be ideal for my eLearning needs, any advice on feature-rich, user-friendly solutions would be highly appreciated.
There are several open-source Learning Management Systems (LMS) available. You can check the following blog for a full list and choose whichever that adheres to your needs.
After thoroughly researching open source learning management systems (LMS), I can confidently say that there are several excellent options available. One of the most popular and widely-used open source LMS platforms is Moodle. Moodle is a free, flexible, and feature-rich system that allows educators to create online courses, manage student enrollment, track progress, and facilitate collaboration. Another notable open source LMS is Canvas by Instructure, which is known for its intuitive interface and robust set of tools for teaching and learning. Additionally, there are other open source alternatives like Sakai, Chamilo, and Totara Learn that provide schools, universities, and organizations with customizable, cost-effective solutions for delivering online education and training. The open source nature of these LMS platforms means they can be tailored to meet specific needs, and the communities behind them are constantly improving and expanding their capabilities.

As an instructor who has used both Moodle and Canvas, I much prefer Canvas. It is much easier for me, a non-technical user, to build my classes in Canvas. It has been quite a while since I used Moodle, so I don’t know if it has improved.
