I’m planning my course with 6 modules, and I’m about to record Module 1, which will take about 90 minutes. I’m wondering if that’s a good idea to have a single 90-minute video in an LMS. Should I consider breaking it down into smaller 5 videos of around 18 minutes each? What are the best practices here?
Honestly, I think a 90-minute video is way too long. Most people struggle to pay attention that long. If you can break it into shorter chunks, like 10-20 minutes, that would be way better.
I’ve seen that learners really don’t want to sit through something that long. If you have natural breaks or sections, that would be a great chance to split it up. Keeping videos to around 5-7 minutes is often suggested for better retention.
I think file size and bandwidth are also concerns. A 90-minute video could be huge and might cause buffering issues, especially for people with slower internet connections.
For sure, you should consider your audience. If they are used to shorter content, a long video might lead them to disengage. I’ve found that if you keep videos around 5-10 minutes, learners stay more focused.
I get that some material needs depth, but keep in mind that learners also benefit from interactivity. If you have activities or checkpoints between shorter videos, that could enhance their learning experience.
