Hi,
in order to better understand my question I feel that I will need to explain my current setup:
I am running an e-learning business. Basically we are selling e-learning platforms for companies in the medical sector. The companies and their employees have access to their “own”-branded portal with different courses available inside the portal. That means our customers have their own portal with 2 different types of users:
-
- normal user: Normal users can basically only finish courses and get their certificate for this
-
- admin user: the can controll the progress of the normal ones and download as well all certificates. see only users of their tenant.
We use TalentLMS under the hood for this, as it fulfills most of our requirements.
We are already developing a lot of functionality by our self but we can’t change the general setup of TalentLMS or include completely new features taht are requested by our own customers.
But as we are growing and so our requirements I am looking or a good alternative that would enable us to better customize it, e.g. developing our own features etc…,
I know that the company behind TalentLMS does as well offer a another LMS called efront: eFront Pricing Plans - Get Your eFront Quote
It looks like it is more targeted for enterprises and it gives you the option to customize it.
So here are my questions:
- Did anyone here already migrated from TalentLMS to efront. I am assuming, as they are from one company that we could easily migrate all users and their data more easily than migrating to a completely new LMS?
- Do you know any other LMS (SaaS or self hosted) that are suitable for our use case? The should be in general modern and should provide the option for an app.
Looking forward to hear some recommendations
Best regards

Hey Brown , There’s a plugin in eFront that lets you transfer your talent LMS data, but I haven’t done it myself so I can’t say how easy it is. I’ve made some small changes in eFront before, but it’s old and not very user-friendly. The user experience is worse than talentLMS. What features or add-ons are you thinking of adding to a LMS?

I also run my own e-learning business, but it turns out that I am much better at the building product side than I am at sales/marketing. What I’ve had built could certainly support this with some changes.
Its a product that allows anyone to spin up a custom branded exam prep website (both an admin and student site) and sell subscription based access to it. Among some other modifications as needed, we could make it so that the org owner (company) is charged based on number of users rather than charging the end user (student/employee).
I’m wondering if you’d be interested in a chatting about a partnership of some kind?

I found out that the migration plugin mainly transfers user data, but it doesn’t handle certificates or course content, which is a bit disappointing. I noticed they rolled out a new UI for eFront, like they did for TalentLMS, but I’m not sure if it’s really an upgrade in terms of usability.
One feature that a lot of people are asking for is the ability to create a “learning plan.” This would let us set deadlines for courses that students need to complete and show those deadlines in their learner view, plus send reminders a few weeks or days before the due dates. Right now, TalentLMS doesn’t seem to offer this, and I’m not sure if eFront has a plugin for it either.
Another useful addition would be to have webhooks triggered by certain events, like when a user is added or removed. This would help us with billing and make things more detailed.
About your warning, I feel the same way. Both TalentLMS and eFront seem a bit outdated. I’m generally happy with the support, but I’m not sure they’re going to evolve in a way that fits our company’s needs.

Did you build your courses using the TalentLMS builder, or did you create them outside and then upload them? The team I worked with had to manually upload their SCORM courses to eFront and use a CSV file to assign users to courses. They also had to recreate some courses in eFront that were initially made in TalentLMS.
If moving course content around sounds like a hassle, we could definitely write a plugin to make that easier.
About those “learning plans,” have you checked out eFront’s new plugin for learning paths? It might be similar to what you’re looking for. Just a heads up, though: some of eFront’s plugins may not work well for multi-tenant situations. For instance, you can’t restrict some plugins to specific tenants or let them customize settings for certain plugins.
eFront does let you create plugins that can respond to internal notifications, and I’ve actually developed one that sends web requests based on those notifications. These plugins are made in PHP.
If you’re not dead set on making your own extensions and are okay with a provider that’s open to feature requests, I’d suggest the SaaS LMS I work with. It’s new, packed with features, and has a mobile app. They don’t have webhooks yet, but I bet that wouldn’t be a tough request for them to handle.

Our KnowVela LMS was designed to offer multi-tenant access with unique URL (portals) for each tenant, where the look and feel of each tenant’s site can be defined independently of the other tenant sites. This allows course material to be created once and shared by all tenants to reduce multi-tenant admin costs.
DM me if you want to learn more or would like to talk about your needs in greater detail.

Highly recommend https://edloomio.com . It’s very flexible and even supports customizations. Cheaper than eFront and very clean UI. We are using it for our company and I love it. Small team behind it, located in the Netherlands.
