A long post seeking advice on simulation-based e-learning exercise

Hey there, I am a teacher, new to e-learning. We designed a free course for working professionals focusing on integrated techniques for troubleshooting and generating optimal solutions. After offline training, we want to assess participants through simulated exercises, guiding them through problem definition and solution design.

We envision a training mode with feedback and a final testing session where mistakes lead to their own branches, culminating in a score for certification. However, we lack coding skills and funds, so we need cost-effective tools to create these simulations.

What would you suggest I invest my time in learning to develop these training simulations and the certificate later on?

For free, open-source options, try Twine. It’s designed for creating interactive stories and could help you structure your simulations. However, you will need some coding for variables and scripts.

Check out H5P at h5p.org. They have tools that may suit your needs and it’s open-source.

Have you looked into Storyline? It’s widely used in e-learning, but may not fit your budget.

Consider creating an MVP. A simple PDF with your scenario details can be a starting point. Use a quiz tool to collect answers and data on knowledge transfer.

You can create a front-end MVP in PowerPoint with branching scenarios. From there, H5P might handle both front-end and back-end needs.
